I fished the New Haven this morning and found plenty of fish in the Upper river near Bristol. It's typical to catch many 6-10" wild rainbows this time of the year in those stretches with an occasional fish over 12" and a few larger fish that are seeking thermal refuge in the cooler, more oxygenated water. Ads I walked down to a stretch of water I was pleased and almost startled by a few fish rising in a longer pocket with a nice tailout. In the air over the next half an hour I saw small Caddis, Blue Wings, Midge and a few dark, very small Stoneflies. I even saw one brave, "late to the party" Sulpher. The fish certainly had their fair share of options to eat. I nymphed all morning and caught fish on Baetis, Midge and Small Caddis larvae. It was a great morning and was happy to see the river at a decent level for that area. The Upper New Haven should be in good shape for the coming days, but watch out for those hot days coming right before the cool down. Things should be in great shape by mid next week, so take it easy on the fish during the heat!. Thermometers should get some use.
